Schloss Watches - Fine Watches Built for Generations

News & Events

cobra01.jpgThe Schloss Watches Team spent the first weekend of August in Tooele, Utah, at the famed Miller Motorsports Park to see some amazing racing featuring some of the true legends of yesteryear.

The weather was a bit overcast, but the heat managed to punish both drivers and spectators with temperatures in the mid-90s. As hot as it was in the paddock and the garages, there much even hotter action on what truly is one of the finest tracks in the world – period.

GT40The Miller Motorsports Park team wisely chose the stage this race – the Zions Bank Heroes of Speed – on the outer circuit, which is 3.06 miles long, features more than 10 wicked turns and of course, has one of the longest and fastest straight-aways ever built.

And while the turns make for some spectacular views for fans, it is the straights where we got our kicks. As well, it is a great vantage point from which we timed the laps of our favorite cars with our precision-built Schloss R40 chronographs.

This is a track where you can get up close and personal. We wandered the garages, poked our heads into the cockpits and perused what was under the hood, often-times with the actual driver of the car telling us the details and Porsche 911 with Union 76 Liveryanswering questions.

It is difficult to think of a venue where you have this much access. It is almost unheard of today and that is what makes the Heroes of Speed series so unique and worthwhile.

Watching a couple of vintage Ford Mustang GT 350 ponies going head-to-head, making those old push-rod engines work as hard as they can, truly is a magical experience.

We were thrilled to see some of the other legendary manufacturers and models, including a plethora of Porsches, including a really trick 914-6.

Mustang GT350There also were several GT2 class cars, as well as a host of type 901 models that would have any enthusiast drooling (and as you know, everyone on the Schloss Watches team loves Porsches, so had it not been so dry, we probably could have filled a bucket!).

Other makes that had us and the crowd cheering were factory Ford Cobras, a couple of GT40s, Stingray Corvettes, a retired but incredibly fast Formula 1 car (the sound they make is truly something special), a circa 1987 BMW light formula car with a 12 cylinder engine, a Judd-powered special and many others.

GT2 Porsche in Screaming Yellow LiveryWe had plenty of opportunity to take a ton of photos and of course, we did. And just we can rub it in a little: this entire race – all three days of it – was free. That’s right. Free. The sponsor – Zions Bank – picked up the tab for anyone who wanted to show up.

We’ve said it before and we will say it again: Miller Motorsports Park is one of the FINEST facilities of its kind anywhere in the world and it is worth seeing a race (or several) here, especially one with vintage cars.

Seeing one free? That was just the icing on a very tasty cake.

Enjoy the photos and we will see you soon!
